TWENTY MINUTES LATER Dalziel joined Clarissa inside his carriage. He stepped in and slammed the door, then hit the roof twice to signal they leave. As the carriage moved, he glared at her. “What the devil did you think you were doing in there?”

She opened her mouth to answer.

“Do you ken how dangerous that was?”

She looked contrite.

“You told me you were off to a harmless soiree with the ladies. My arse!” he shouted. “What were you doing there?” He sat across from her, but he was livid.

“I was trying to ...” She fumbled to search for an answer and bit her lip.

What Clarissa did not realize is Dalziel knew when she was lying, she had a tell. She always bit her bottom lip and chewed.

“Dinnae lie to me,” he yelled. Dalziel was losing it. To think his wife had placed herself in danger, she was reckless, oblivious to the dangers in that house and tonight of all nights when he was closing in on his target. This was not what he signed up for. He was supposed to get a biddable boring wife, and he got anything but.

“You will tell me what you were doing in there, wife and what parchments you have hidden in your garment.”

“I was searching for a bible passage—”

“Ris,” Dalziel growled in a low voice.

Clarissa sighed. “Tis just letters.”

“Show me.”

“No.”

“So, help me wife, if you dinnae show me now, I will strip you naked and search you myself. The choice is yours.”

Clarissa blushed. “You would not dare?”

“I have licked every inch of your body do you think I would not strip you naked right here?”

They sat in complete silence neither moving and then Dalziel lunged at her.

“Alright, I’ll show you!” she yelled. Both hands up in front of her to stop him coming closer.

Dalziel relaxed back into his seat and lifted his hand palm open towards her.

Clarissa huffed. “Honestly, you are the most infuriating, cumbersome, high handed...” She ranted incoherently and reluctantly pulled out the parchments from her dress and handed it over. She folded her arms and glared at her husband.

Under any other circumstance, Dalziel would have laughed. She was adorable when she was riled. But right now, was no laughing matter.

He opened the parchment and read. It was Davenport’s Will and there was a codicil about a boy, something to do with property and inheritance. Dalziel knew there was so much more to this tale. “Who is the boy in this Will?”

“No one,” she said, biting her lip.

Damn it. Dalziel swore to himself. She was keeping secrets.

“Hand over the letters.”

She huffed and retrieved a bundle of letters.

He flicked through them, but nothing struck him as odd, although it was mostly in French and again some mention of a child named, ‘Jordan.’

“What do you ken about these?”

“Nothing, I have never seen them before, I was merely retrieving them for a friend,” Clarissa replied.

“Who’s your friend?” Dalziel asked.

“Tis none of your concern. I promised I would not tell.”

“But I am your husband.”

Clarissa snorted.

They remained in a silent stare off.
